How a Simple Finger Game Helps Kids Master Piano Basics

Introducing children to piano can be challenging, especially when it comes to associating finger numbers with actual finger movements. In piano, each finger is numbered from 1 to 5, but helping kids make that connection quickly can take some practice.

To make this easier and more fun, I play a simple game with students during their first few lessons. We both hold up our hands and start pointing to fingers, calling out numbers as fast as we can. For example, we might say, "1-2-3-4-5" or mix it up with, "2-3-4-1-5." While it might seem easy for adults, it's an exciting challenge for kids.

Spending just a minute each lesson on this game helps children develop a strong association between the numbers and their fingers. Within a few weeks, they'll have this skill mastered, which will make their piano learning smoother and more enjoyable.
